Brene Brown, one of my favourite author's, researchers and all round human beings, developed a leadership programme called "Dare to Lead." She breaks down her Braving Leadership formula into the following:
Boundaries
Reliability
Accountability
Vault
Integrity
Non Judgemental
Generosity
Boundaries - your ability to say clearly what is acceptable and what is not acceptable to you. AND you ability to clearly ask of others, what is and is not acceptable to them. This can apply to everything from what you accept in language, to your expectations of how people respect your time, the balance between your home life and your 40 hours a week in work, and so much more.
Reliability - you say what you will do and you do what you say. Simple. Don't over promise and under-deliver. This can apply to time keeping, work product, your mood, how you deal with mistakes - it is about being predictable for others which creates security.
Accountability - You own your mistakes, apologise and take action to put them right.
Vaulting - This is a tough one for many people. It is knowing what is yours to share and what is not. Sometimes known as don't get involved in gossip. Knowing that your confidences are kept and that you keep other people's is a cornerstone of trust.
Integrity - You choose courage over comfort. You choose what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy. And you choose to practice your values rather than simply professing them.
Non Judgement - I can ask for what I need, and you can ask for what you need. We can talk about how we feel without judgement.
Generosity - You extend the most generous interpretation possible to the intentions, words, and actions of others.
Brene has developed a 10 minute assessment you can do to check your leadership behaviours and skills and she will email you a guide as to which leadership skills you have in abundance and which you may want to develop.
Her website is choc full of free advice, guidance, stories and models to frame your leadership development. I highly recommend it. You can access her leadership assessment below.
